Posted November 07, 2018 12:20:34The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group has used social media to lure Westerners to its ranks, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Tuesday.
The report released to the public by DHS’s National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) revealed that ISIS had created a “media platform” for recruiting Westerners who would eventually be able to join the terrorist group.
The platform was dubbed “The Internet of War,” and it included an app, a website and a Twitter account.
“This platform enables individuals who are interested in joining ISIS to use social media and other platforms to create a more cohesive online presence and build community,” the report said.
“The platform encourages members to engage with other members of the group through social media or to engage in online discussions on social media.”
The platform, known as “The War Room,” has been used for the last two years to recruit and train members of ISIS, according the report.
It was created by Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, a self-proclaimed commander in Iraq and the leader of the self-styled caliphate in Syria.
The ISIS group is now in a position to be able “to recruit individuals from the West and potentially from other parts of the world,” according to the report, which noted that the group has “used social media extensively” to reach recruits in Europe, the U tos the United States and elsewhere.
According to the NCTC report, the ISIS platform “is an extension of the network of the organization’s media arm.”
It included “extensive social media content, videos, audio recordings, photos, and social media posts,” according the DHS report.
The app was designed to be a tool for recruitment, said the report about the app.
The app “allows users to engage on the platform in real-time with other users, which facilitates recruitment and provides a means to organize social media engagement.”
The app “provides members of [ISIS] with a place to meet and recruit potential recruits for ISIS,” the DHS said.
The group has also created a social media platform that “is tailored to the interests and needs of the foreign fighters” it is recruiting, the report noted.
The online platform is “designed to be the vehicle for communicating and organizing recruiting activities,” and was “designed primarily for foreign fighters who are unable to use traditional means of communication, such as communicating through traditional media,” the study said.
“The War Rooms’ platform provides a central hub for recruitment to the foreign fighter network, and the platform facilitates communication among members of foreign fighters on a daily basis,” the NCTS report said, adding that the platform was designed for “members of foreign fighter networks who have limited means of communicating.”
“The platform provides individuals who have a desire to join ISIS the opportunity to utilize the platform and meet with other ISIS members and foreign fighters,” the agency said.
